Regeneration

Regeneration means rebirth.  This rebirth is different from our physical birth in that it is of our spirit.  It is necessary because we are born spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1).  This birth brings us into the spiritual realm just as our physical birth brought us into the physical world (Ephesians 2:6).  We are spiritually born and begin as a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17).  This birth and transformation is a result of God and not of anything that we do, just like our physical births (Ephesians 2:1, 8).

Jesus made this absolute distinction when he discussed the matter with a inquisitive Pharisee (John 3:3, 7).  This rebirth is absolutely necessary to even know and see the true God.  This birth is not optional or by choice either.  It happens, by God, when God initiates it (John 3:6).

Regeneration is what begins the moment we are saved.  He guarantees our inheritance of eternal life (Ephesians 1:14) because he adopts us as his own child (Galatians 4:5), and brings us home to him spiritually (2 Corinthians 5:18–20).  He justifies us and brings us to peace with God (Romans 5:1)

No one is born saved, or wills themselves to be saved (John 1:12–13) and prior to being saved, we are NOT children of God but children of wrath (Ephesians 2:3; Romans 5:18–20). Once saved, we are then at peace with God and adopted as his own (Romans 5:1).

We are given a new life (Titus 3:5; 2 Corinthians 5:17) and new identity as God's own children  (John 1:12–13; Galatians 3:26). With the new life and new identity we then start to become the people God originally wanted us to become (Romans 8:28–30).

All this is only made possible through the person and works of Jesus Christ and not anything we do or say or try (Romans 3:20).
